This film shows spectators and yard workers as they stood in the rain in the Newport News shipyard. Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) John Chafee; Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Admiral Hyman Rickover, retired; First Lady Pat Nixon, the ship's sponsor; and Mr. L. C. Ackerman, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company are seen on the speaker's stand. Mrs. Nixon is shown as she broke a champagne bottle over the bow and received a hug from Mr. Ackerman. The guided missile frigate the USS California (DLGN-36) is seen as it slid down the ways. Several tug boats are seen in the water.
